Performance and Technical Theater Training Opportunities for ages 8-15 led by a talented group of...

L.A.T.T.E. (Live Arts Teen Theatre Ensemble) provides high quality performance opportunities to area youth. Performance opportunities whose standards are high, whose entry fee is excellence and talent, and whose purpose is to provide experience and voice to the young people in our area who are quite beyond dabbling and who need a performance focus for their labors in acting, writing, dance, music and theater classes.

This year, LATTE will feature a focus on a new program: LA:T4, the Live Arts Teen Theater Team. Under the guidance and direction of experienced teacher Daria Okugawa, the hands-on mentorship of Live Arts Artistic Director John Gibson, and a host of guest artists, the 12 teens chosen to be a part of LA:T4 will make a 9 month commitment and be engaged in weekly rehearsals and classes for the creation of an original work based on source material from the Brothers Grimm. This new theater piece, designed to tour, will bring the magic of live theater to people and places where it would not otherwise be seen, and provide the teens involved with an in-depth education in making art, partners, and community.

Other youth theater education opportunities are available through LATTE classes and workshops in performance and technical theater. The Youth Acting Studio, for ages 8-12, and the Teen Acting Studio, for teen actors, offer classes throughout the school year in voice, movement, scene study, and contemporary and classical monologue study. The Teen Acting Studio offers classes throughout the school year in voice, movement, scene study, and contemporary and classical monologue study for teen actors. The Summer Theatre Institute provides age appropriate theater training for ages 8-18 in a fun, day camp setting and focuses on a complete vision of building theater and intensive exploration of theater genres such as comedy, musical theatre and Shakespeare. Audition and Technical Theater classes also are ongoing. An active teen internship program is also underway, offering 5 students per year an opportunity to learn about all aspects of the theater through hands-on, on-the-job training and in coordination with area school community service and independent study programs.

LATTE also reaches out to the community through school visits, workshops, community performances, theater tours, audience discussions, study guides and scholarship and pay what you can programs.

Adult Theater Laboratories

Live Arts’ mission is to forge theater and community and our commitment to high aesthetic standards and open door participation is key to this effort. Our performers, directors, and technical artists are volunteers with varying ranges of theatrical training. In an effort to keep our long term participants challenged and to provide entry points for anyone with a wish or an interest, Live Arts offers the following adult theatre education opportunities:

Actors’ LAB: An ongoing actor’s studio which meets th. The first hour is available for drop in and focuses on tuning the actor’s body and voice. The second and third hours focus on scene work and improvisation designed to challenge habits and encourage exploration, synthesis, and refinement of one’s own approach to acting and participants register for eight week sessions. Current instructor: Carol Pederson

Playwrights’ LAB: meets the first and third Monday of the month and aims to give new and seasoned playwrights an environment in which to develop, refine and create staged readings of their original works. Current leader: Bill Rough

Director’s Round Table: A monthly topic driven seminar for those with some former directing experience. Seminar topics will include casting, blocking, developing new works, working with designers, growing a cast, and an investigating creativity.

Technicans’ LAB: Sessions give both teens and adults a chance to put their hands on sound, lights, makeup and other production elements and leave class with tangible skills that can be put to immediate use in upcoming productions.

Improv LAB: This laboratory moves through fundamental, intermediate and advanced forms of improvisation. Explores the Chicago Schools of improvisation as well as improvisation applications such as Playback Theater.
Audition Workshops: Prior to the auditions for every Live Arts production (LATTE included), workshops are offered to teach general audition skills, the director’s vision for the production and to enhance familiarity with the play’s background and script. Instructors rotate but are never the director.

Master Classes: Specialized classes offered to provide intensive study of a specific area of theater study. Sample past classes include Dialects, Physical Theater: Lecoq Clowning, Viewpoints Study.

Tuition is charged for classes, but scholarships are always available. For more information contact Education Director, Jennifer Peart @434-977-4177 ext. 100. email: education@livearts.org
