He Who Gets Slapped
Presented by
Jay & Barbara Kessler
DownStage / May 18 - June 9, 2012
A stranger’s arrival at a circus disrupts a world as delicately balanced as a tight-rope act. Lion tamers, bareback riders, and scam-artists alike fall under the mysterious spell of He Who Gets Slapped as He himself suffers the pangs of unrealizable love and the return of ghosts from his past. Almost forgotten and yet, once experienced, unforgettable, He Who Gets Slapped is a tragicomic masterpiece where philosophy meets physicality and the stirrings of laughter and longing come to a boil under the big top.

“Growing up in a small Southern town certainly has its artistic benefits. It has defined the extremes of my comedy and has provided me an anchor for the core of my identity. I have been working on my oral history for years. For this performance, I wanted to shape my stories into a one-hour wild ride.” — So says Denise Stewart, creator of Dirty Barbie, a hilarious one-woman show about the author’s strange southern childhood (is there any other kind?). With the help of her alter ego, Dirty Barbie, Denise puts the “fun” back in “dysfunctional” as she spins tales of scarlet fever, scotch over ice, and girls gone wild.
