Designers

Theater is, at its heart, a collaborative medium. It is all about developing a beautiful idea based upon a piece of text, and then taking that idea and sharing it with your fellow designers, to see how it can play with all of the other ideas on the table. It’s all about personal expression through give and take in a supportive environment.

Live Arts has been fortunate to have many talented designers – some gained their experience in college, some in professional theaters, some in other volunteer theaters, and many right here at Live Arts. Whether you have a wealth of experience and expertise or just a passion to explore a new craft, we want you to join us! Individuals looking to experience theater design for the first time may be paired with a mentor to guide you through the process, and help you become a designer in your own right.

To design for the theater requires vision, patience, adaptability, and a good sense of humor. Live Arts is always looking for people to design sets, lights, costumes, sound, and properties who are willing to share their visions, celebrate the creativity of others, and not get too upset when occasionally things end up not quite the color they imagined.

Much of the design takes place in the early planning stages of the production, though designers are a vital part of the production team through closing night. The mostly volunteer build crews work in the theater, in our spacious scene shop, or the costume shop on weekends and evenings. Design schedules can vary depending on the complexity of the design, but it generally lasts for several weeks.

Jump right in! Email Scott Dunn at scottdunn@livearts.org and tell him you want to become a designer! Or fill out an application form here.
